Beekeeping project - Gazooka Beehive re-established firmly

Progress on our beekeeping project

In the heart of Hoima, Uganda, our remarkable initiative is underway to empower rural women through beekeeping. Led by a dedicated team, this project aims to not only foster economic independence but also to create lasting positive change in the lives of impoverished women.

About the Beekeeping Project

With the invaluable support of generous donors, the project has already made significant strides. An experienced trainer has been engaged to equip beneficiaries with essential knowledge and skills in beekeeping. Beyond the simple production of honey, the overarching goal is to uplift and transform the lives of these women, providing them with sustainable means of livelihood.

Though the ultimate target is to benefit 65 rural women, the project has been jumpstarted with the acquisition of seven beehives, thanks to the generosity of donors. These women, eagerly awaiting the project’s commencement, have shown immense enthusiasm and readiness to participate in the beekeeping initiative.

One unique aspect of this initiative is that donors who contributed to the project have beehives named after them, symbolizing their invaluable support and connection to the cause.

The Challenges

Like many endeavors, this project has faced its share of challenges. Extended heavy rains have delayed the start of operations, but the team remains vigilant, eagerly awaiting a reduction in rainfall to kick-start the project. We have managed to get four (4) of the seven beehives colonised. Our team is working tirelessly to have the remaining three hives colonized as well. The total budget for the project is $8,183, however, we were able to kick-start the project with just $224, which was raised through our Global Giving page. This means that we had to significantly scale down many components of the project.

The Journey Forward

Though we started with just seven hives, we still remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering a total of 65 poor women. Through the project, we hope to create a  sustainable change among rural women by increasing their incomes througn beekeeping. Furthermore, we hope to foster a brighter future for the wider community of Hoima through replication of knowledge and experiences gained. We will continue to promote the project and add more hives as we raise more funds. The most important  is tht we have already taken the first steps.

This hive was established under a bamboo shed - one of our previous projects
This hive was first established under a tree, before we helped the farmer build a stable stand
The farmers were trained on how to make the hives from local materials
Women received hands-on training in Beehive construction
