We are building bridges across borders.
We work through international projects and partnerships that connect locally led initiatives with funding, knowledge and collaboration.
Our involvement varies from project to project. In international programmes, GHF can participate directly as a project partner. In Uganda, we work with Soil Health and Climate Action Network (SHCAN), which leads local implementation while GHF supports project development, fundraising, communication and international collaboration.
Green Bridges 2026-2029
Connecting young people across Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa
Green Bridges brings young people from Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa together to exchange experiences, question assumptions and work with real challenges around climate and sustainability. Through virtual exchanges and mixed-country collaboration, participants learn from people living in different contexts and explore how ideas can be turned into practical action.
For us, Green Bridges puts an important part of our mission into practice. It gives us a way to connect locally grounded experience with young people, organisations, researchers and practitioners across countries, while creating space for knowledge to move in more than one direction.
As part of the project, we will host at free virtual exchanges. We will explore questions such as how farming as pathway to food security and youth prosperity, climate change in different local realities, climate action between individuals and systems, human nutrients recycled safely, and what makes a climate project realistic. The sessions are designed around discussion, peer learning and practical exercises rather than lectures.
Participation is particularly aimed at young people, with a strong emphasis on making the exchanges accessible to people from marginalised backgrounds and voices that are often underrepresented in international climate discussions. Green Bridges as a whole aims for at least 20% of participants to come from marginalised groups.
The exchanges are connected through Action Network Worldwide (ANW), the project’s online learning and networking community. We are also continuing to build our facilitator community. People with relevant experience who are interested in helping create inclusive, participatory international exchanges are welcome to get in touch. Interested in taking part? Follow Green Bridges for upcoming exchanges and join the Action Network Worldwide community to connect with participants and opportunities across the project.
Green Bridges is co-funded by the European Union through Erasmus+ Virtual Exchanges (Project 101253584 – GREEN BRIDGES).
Partnership with SHCAN
Our closest partner in Uganda
Soil Health and Climate Action Network (SHCAN) is our closest partner in Uganda. The relationship goes beyond a conventional project partnership: the two organisations share a common history and work closely on project development, funding, communication, knowledge exchange and long-term strategy, while remaining separate organisations with their own governance and responsibilities.
SHCAN is based in Hoima and works directly with smallholder farmers and rural communities. It leads local implementation, community engagement and technical work, while GHF works from Denmark to connect this work with funding, research, specialist knowledge and international partners. This allows us to build on an established local organisation rather than creating parallel structures around projects. SHCAN currently works across sustainable agriculture, soil health, climate action and rural livelihoods.
Across the shared history of GHF and SHCAN and our current collaboration, work has included:
- Bamboo, biochar and climate adaptation: 865 bamboo seedlings were distributed as part of a wider project combining land restoration, biochar and cleaner cooking technologies.
- Soil-health experiments: field trials and demonstration gardens have tested biochar, compost and urine-based treatments for crops including maize, beans and groundnuts.
- Goats through a pay-it-forward model: funding raised through GHF has been channelled to SHCAN for goats for rural women, with offspring passed on to new participants.
- Trees, seeds and farmer groups: earlier work included 2,947 trees planted, more than 2,890 kg of maize, bean and rice seed distributed, and 511 farmers organised in nine village savings groups.
- Livelihood initiatives: work has included rabbits, beekeeping, sustainable piggery, vegetable farming, micro-loans for rural women and women-led agroecology. SHCAN currently has seven projects listed through GlobalGiving and has been vetted on the platform since 2021.
- Developing work: we are exploring further work around urine-diversion sanitation and nutrient recovery, alongside continued development of biochar and bamboo as locally appropriate climate and livelihood solutions.
